Singapore Management University's (SMU) Piano Ensemble, The Ivory Keys, will be holding its inaugural piano festival – Klaviesta! which fuses the concepts of "klavier" (piano) and "fiesta" to celebrate the joy of performing and listening to piano music. Through the course of this week-long festival, we will be playing host to performers from various junior colleges and universities, showcasing young talents, and fostering interaction within the piano community.
The festival will kick off with an exciting series of free lunchtime performances by secondary and tertiary students currently enrolled in the Ministry of Education's Music Elective Programme (MEP). Other highlights include a piano masterclass with Dr Thomas Hecht, Head of Piano Studies at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, a tri-university concert, and a professional artiste concert featuring Mr Timothy Ku and Ms Soon Liok Kee. So pull your friends along and grab your tickets now before it's too late!
To kick-start the week-long festival, Performance@Concourse features local music students who will perform at the heart of the SMU Campus - The Underground Concourse. This event provides a good opportunity for aspiring pianists to showcase their musical versatility and to hone their showmanship. Performers include students enrolled in the Music Elective Programmes (MEP), students from local music institutions, as well as music enthusiasts.
The Tri-Uni Concert will see pianists from the three tertiary institutions joining forces in a musical extravaganza that promises to enthrall and excite. This concert marks the first collaboration by SMU Ivory Keys, NUS Piano Ensemble, and NTU Piano Ensemble. Don't miss out on this "B"-themed concert which will have pianists playing works by composers like Bach, Brahms, Bartok, Barber and more!
As part of our piano festival, we have invited American pianist Thomas Hecht, Head of Piano Studies at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music to come down to conduct a 2 hour masterclass for us. The illustrious Dr. Hecht has had vast experience performing and teaching and prior to his appointment at Yong Siew Toh,he served as the Head of Piano Studies and Artist-In-Residence at the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. Many aspiring concert pianists have flourished under his tutelage and he is frequently in demand as a performer and teacher.
Our festival culminates with a performance by two renowned artists, Timothy Ku and Soon Liok Kee.
Highly accomplished pianist duo, Timothy Ku and Soon Liok Kee have enthralled the music community both locally and abroad with their passion and dedication to their art. Known for their dazzling chemistry, they have wowed audiences with the ingenuity of their musical expression, colorful nuances and elaborate technique.
This year, they will presenting an eclectic mix of works including masterpieces by Poulenc, Czerny, Arutiunian and Babadjanian, Bolcom, Shostakovich, Franck, Moscheles etc. So don't miss out on this colorful and unpredictable musical journey! A concert not to be missed!

The Ivory Keys was formed in December 2007 by a group of passionate and talented SMU individuals. The club provides SMU pianists with an avenue to refine their skills and showmanship as well as a platform to showcase their talents. The club also seeks to be a place for music lovers to share and exchange ideas.
The Ivory Keys places great emphasis on the interpretation and performance of classical piano music. In addition to solo works, members are also exposed to interesting and challenging four-hand works, with the aim of promoting two-piano and ensemble playing. The club also conducts music appreciation sessions to expose its members to other music forms such as orchestral music, opera, and ethnic music. After its debut in the SMU Arts Festival 2008, The Ivory Keys held its first concert, Myriad, in the same year, and its second concert, Seasons of Time, in 2009. The club also performs regularly at school events such as Convocation and Patron's Day.
